  • San Francisco 2007 summer class: Calligraphy 1

These 15 lessons course (3 hours each lesson) is designed to give a calligraphic foundation to the history of Western letterforms and is intended for students of graphic design.

Students learn the proportion and spacing of Roman capital letters and expressive capitals, the importance of word and line spacing, the use of contrast with calligraphy + type and type + type, the lowercase letterforms and there origin in the carolingian writing of the X century, the italic forms and their cursive, the expressive potential of handwriting. A book to show all samples, designed as requested,  is the final presentation required.

Students also acquire a better ability to work by hand, they refine their visual knowledge to place typography and calligraphy on a page, to see details  and appreciate forms.

A 7 days workshop in Arezzo, Italy with Monica Dengo and Cristina Balbiano. In this course students will work with expressive calligraphy and bookbinding to produce an entirely handmade book.
