Sansepolcro

Located at the foot of the last stretch of the Tuscan Apennines, near the borders with the Marche and Umbria in the upper Tiber valley, the town of Sansepolcro in Tuscany, heart of the Renaissance,  was the birthplace of the painter Piero della Francesca and the mathematician Luca Pacioli. Students will observe the golden section in the tables representing the five solids made by Leonardo da Vinci, they will see original documents written in cancelleresca and humanistic cursive, they will admire the paintings of Piero della Francesca and learn Michelangelo’s handwriting. Together we’ll search for parallels between the culture and the forms of writing.

The Civic Museum located in the architectural complex of the Palazzo dei Conservatori houses extraordinary works by Piero della Francesca.

The Class

Starting from historical introductions, we will arrive at contemporary explorations of writing by hand and mark making in Italy and Japan. Students will make books reflecting many ways of seeing and experiencing the act of writing and its relation to culture. Books will be made entirely by hand with Japanese and European papers. Satsuki will also demonstrate coloring these papers with indigo and kakishibu.
During the week Casermarcheologica will host an installation by Monica and Satuki. There will be a performance and students will learn how to create an exhibition of their artworks.
