These two words were chosen as samples for a concept development around the meaning of the word insomnia and the desire to sleep. Words visually convey meaning and handwritten ones do it even more clearly: this is particularly evident when we look at an erased word. The gestures of erasing a word become therefore an interesting field of study and experimentation.

The samples chosen are not beautiful, nor calligraphic in the common sense of this word, but rather crude, unrefined and lacking expertise.
Depending on the meaning and feelings you want to convey, you may want to write something not beautiful, not calligraphic or perhaps insecure or in doubt. In these cases it might be easier for a calligrapher to write with the hand she/he does not normally use for writing, since it is almost inevitable to show that gentleness or confidence that comes so natural. Perhaps you may want to try with your feet!!!!

What is important in this exercise is not the expert letter form, but the meaning it conveys. In placing this word in a design context, the use of space will be essential in reinforcing the meaning and creating a visually balanced (or purposely unbalanced) image.
