The way of Writing, Calligraphy Exhibition. Seven hundred years of calligraphic art between East and West, Museo Correr, Venice
The 2024 The Way of Writing exhibition was dedicated to Marco Polo's journey from Italy to China. The six artists, from Iraq, Iran, China, Armenia, and Italy, were selected for their ability to highlight the communicative power of the forms and symbols of each writing system. Alongside the contemporary works, ancient documents from the collections of the Museo Correr Library were displayed.
My circular work To Woder is to go Beyond Boundaries was placed at the beginning of the exhibit, which ended with another circular work by the Chinese artist Mingjun Luo, Traces of Writing, featuring ideograms from the Daodejing. The Armenian artist Sarco Meene used handwritten letters from her grandfather, the poet Karpis Surenyan; the Iranian artist Golnaz Fathi wrote unreadable words inspired by the poems of Jalal al-Din Rumi; Armenian Gayane Yerkanyan drew Armenian letters as symbols of Armenian cultural heritage; Hassan Massoudy merged history and contemporary art while maintaining legibility and emphasizing the movement of the calligraphic gesture; Mingjun Luo deconstructed the ideogram to its essence, focusing on individual strokes, each gesture carrying cultural significance; and I blurred the letters, stripping structure from the writing, in a desire to transcend all boundaries.
